Overwatch New Character: Ana Amari First Impression
It was announced this week that Overwatch’s newest character will be Ana Amari, mother of Pharah. Ana is the first new character since the game’s launch back in May 2016. She is currently only available in the play test server on the pc version. I was able to play test her and here are my initial thoughts…
Even though Ana looks like a defense character with her sniper rifle, she is actually a support character. Her biotic rifle heals and deals out damage. It’s great that you can heal from afar and not be a squishy support stuck in the action!!
Biotic Rifle: Ana’s rifle shoots darts that can restore health to her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. She can use the rifle’s scope to zoom in on targets and make highly accurate shots. Since her heal is tied to such a high percision weapon, you’ll need to be a crack shot in order to utilize her well during combat situations. Standard sniper rifle with healing and damaging abilities.
Sleep Dart: Ana fires a dart from her sidearm, rendering an enemy unconcious. If this enemy is hit while unconcious, they will immediately wake up. I had some trouble with the sleep darts. You have to make sure you get the aim just right in order for the dart to hit the enemy. I also found that some enemies just jumped right but up after getting hit. I’m not sure if that was just a glinch.
Biotic Grenade: Ana tosses a biotic bomb that deals damage to enemies and heals allies in a small area of effect. Affected allies also receive increased healing from other sources (such as her rifle), while enemies caught in the blast cannot be healed for a few seconds. I REALLY love this ability. Whenever I found myself in the middle of the action and my teammates were losing a lot of health, I just threw this sucker down in the middle of the group and it gave a nice healing boost. I also like how it causes your enemies not to be able to heal too. This works best when matching it with other supports’ healing abilities.
Nano Boost (Ultimate): After Ana hits one of her allies with a Nano Boost, they will temporarily move faster, deal more damage and take less damage from enemy attacks. This is a very potent skill, and useful for storming objectives or clearing entrenched enemies. Timing is key with this ultimate. Choose when to use it wisely since it doesn’t last very long on your ally. I suggest sticking it on a powerful tank that is rushing the objective.
Ana is one of the founding members of Overwatch and mother to Pharah. I really love seeing this representation of a mature mother figure in a video game. When she was announced, I tried to think of another mature female video game character that wasn’t an old crone. If you can think of any, please list in the comments below (games with character creation don’t count). For me, it’s hard to think of one. Most female video game characters are young and beautiful. I also love seeing a mother/daughter team in a video game. In recent years, there have been more father/daughter story lines (which is also great) but it’s also cool is see mother/daughter relationships played out as well.
She is one badass Mother Sniper. I had fun playing her and that Biotic Grenade was a life saver. My only wish for her is mobility. I wish she had some kind of ability to scale up walls like Windowmaker. For a sniper, you want to have that ability to quickly get out of the crowd.
Have you played Ana? What do you think of her?
