Overwatch Beta is Open May 5-9
Available on PC/PS4/XBOX ONE
The FREE Overwatch Beta is now open from May 5-9 (ya, it sucks that it falls on Mother’s Day weekend). Overwatch is an upcoming multiplayer first person shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment (the creators of World of Warcraft). The official US release date for Overwatch is May 24th.
Overwatch is set in the near-future Earth, years after the resolution of the global-scale “Omnic Crisis”. This crisis put humanity under threat of the “Omnic” artificial intelligence. This led to the uprising of robots all around the world and a massive conflict on the global scale. To end this conflict, an international task force called “Overwatch” was formed by the United Nations to protect humanity, ending the Crisis. In the years after, Overwatch remained as a peacekeeping force, but after multiple incidents of criminal activity popped up around the globe, accusations of corruption and sedition began to surface. The people turned against those who had saved them. Once regarded as heroes, members of Overwatch were then looked down upon with suspicion. Then one day, the headquarters of Overwatch were suddenly destroyed – apparently by accident. Officially, the attack took the life of Overwatch leader Jack Morrison and second-in-command Gabriel Reyes. After this event, the task force was eventually disbanded. It is believed by some that the cause of the downfall of Overwatch was due actually to an elaborate conspiracy by those who wanted to see the end of the organization, although nothing has been confirmed officially by the UN- Wikipedia
The game is setup with multiplayer team matches. There are four main game modes to choose from:
- Assault: The one team is tasked with capturing two target points on the map, while the defending team must stop them.
- Escort: The one team is tasked with escorting a payload ( a moving vehicle) to a certain delivery point before time runs out, while the defending team must stop them. The payload vehicle moves along a fixed track when any player on the attacking team is close to it.
- Assault/Escort: The attacking team has to capture the payload and escort it to its destination, while the defending team tries to hold them back.
- Control: Each team tries to capture and maintain a control point until their capture percentage reaches 100%. This game mode is played in a best-of-three format.
There are four character types in Overwatch: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support. It’s very important to have a well balanced team. Each role is equally important and the game does a good job notifying you which role your team may need while picking your character for the match.
Offense characters are able to move fast and are known for their ability to deal large amounts of damage. Tracer (the chic with the blue light on her chest) is my favorite offense character. She has a great ability to rewind time (reversing her position and health from a few seconds previously). She is super fast and just fun to play with. I haven’t tested Reaper yet, but he seems to be another favorite for players.
Defense characters excel at protecting specific locations (great for those game modes that you have to protect an area). They can also provide several means of field support, such as sentry set-up and trapping the enemy team. I still haven’t mastered any of the defense characters (so I guess I’ll have to play more of the beta). I have seen other people play as defense characters.
Mei is a defense character that builds ice walls to block attackers.
Tank characters have the most hit points out of all the characters in the game. Because of this, they are able to draw enemy fire away from their teammates to themselves, so as to disrupt the enemy team. D.VA is my favorite out of the tank characters with her cool mech.
Support characters are characters that have abilities that enhance their own team and/or weaken the enemy team. Zenyatta is a great example of a character with both healing powers and weakening powers.
These characters do not deal the most damage, but they provide plenty of buffs and debuffs that will help their teammates.
I have had so much fun playing support characters. I’ve mostly played with Mercy (angel chick). Now they are pretty squishy characters (easily killed). But with Mercy’s healing and resurrection powers, she is very useful to have on the battlefield.
The great thing about this beta is that you are seeing the entire game. This is it. Everything you see in the beta is what is going to be available when the game is released. I was sold the first night playing the beta.
