For months now, I have been trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Not only to lose weight, but also to control my high cholesterol. I’ve fallen off the band wagon a few times and I decided to sign up for this Color & Glow 5k Run to help get back on it. It also helped that there was a Living Social deal to make it cheaper.
The Color and Glow Run was on April 26, 2014 at Colonial Downs, New Kent, VA. Since it is a glow run, it started at 8:00pm. I never been to one of these before and so I had no idea what to expect. I always wanted to do Glow Me Rad, which is another run event where they throw paint at you.
The day before was pick up day. I went to Dick’s Sporting Goods at Stoney Point mall and picked up my packet and also my teammates. Our team name was “The Runaways”. We decided to decorate our shirts like rocker chicks. Since I’m a fan of wrestling and the Shield, my shirt and persona mimic Roman Reigns from the Shield. After a while of going through names (we mostly did roller derby name generators), I came up with the name Roxie Reigns. I also wanted to make a fake tattoo like his.
For the fake tattoo (right image), I started out tracing where I wanted it with a black eye liner pencil. My friend, Jen, then used a black eyeliner paint pot from E.L.F with an eye liner brush to darken the lines and add details. BIG thank you to Jen since it is a bit tricky to do this on your own. We also added glow in the dark face paint from Party City to make the tattoo glow in the dark. It worked surprisingly well. Sadly I couldn’t get a great photo of that. To keep everything set for the race, I used hairspray on the final tattoo. The tattoo really didn’t smudge until the very end of the race (hours later).
On the back of the shirt,I used cloth paint and glow in the dark acrylic green and yellow paint. “The Runaways” was the name of my team. “Roxie Reigns” was my ‘stage name’. I used one of the hounds from the Shield t shirt as a guide to design this one. Again my talented friend Jen helped me to make the hound look sweet!
When we got to the event there was a nice crowd already gathered at Colonial Downs. One thing that bothered some of us was why did we need to still pay for parking. Parking should have been included in the package deal. Past the parking lot at Colonial Downs was the registration table plus tables to buy paint and food/drinks. Not sure why you would eat just before a 5k race, but to each their own. There was also a performance stage set up by the starting line with a DJ and hype guy.
Overall the atmosphere was really fun. Some people ran the 5k, others walked it. I mostly walked it. They didn’t spray paint at us all the time. Instead it was at every mile mark, they had people with sprayers and a tent with black light. I kinda wished they had sprinklers from above to spray us, but the sprayers did a good job.
At the end of the 5k track, we ended up back where we started and the DJ was really pumping music. The after party was SO much fun and I feel like I got way more paint on me during the party than the actual race. A warning when the paint gets in your eye, it burns for a few seconds. I was unlucky enough to get hit in both eyes and was blinded for a minute or so. Once its out of your eyes, you are fine.
Overall it was a fun evening. It was especially fun to go to Buffalo Wild Wings afterwards covered in the paint and see the looks we got. A lot of people asked about it and thought it was cool. I would do it again. I would like to try Color Me Rad or Pretty Muddy next time.
